Borgeando con Borges/Borging with Borges

Borges quizás no quiso sorprendernos

con sus ficciones, no tuvo, al menos,

la intención de hacerlo y se enfocó

en el otro Borges, el que él quisiera

haber sido.

Su trabajo consistió en imitarlo,

interpretar sus boutades y desesperada

necesidad de ser argentino, milonguero

y lo demostró hasta el final, cuando decidió

ser el mismo, pero ya era un poco tarde.

Aún así, selló su suerte en un país extranjero

con María Kodama y volvió a su infancia

en Ginebra para despedirse del Borges

que creyó conocer.

Borging with Borges

Borges perhaps did not intend to surprise us

with his fictions, nor did he, at least,

have the aim of doing so; instead,

he focused on the other Borges—

the one he would have liked to be.

His work consisted of imitating him,

interpreting his whims and desperate need

to be Argentine, a lover of milonga,

which he demonstrated until the end,

when he chose to be himself—

but by then, it was a little too late.

Even so, he sealed his fate in a foreign land

with María Kodama and returned to his childhood

in Geneva, to bid farewell to the Borges

he believed he had known.
