A Robert Redford, nuestra generación debiera recordarlo como un tipo excepcional, al artista y a la persona. No siempre coinciden ambas cualidades. Curiosamente su nombre artístico era el mismo de su vida real, Charles Robert Redford, un tipo realmente auténtico. La naturalidad en cada una de sus actuaciones, es uno de los aspectos que más nos impresionaba, quizás a quienes seguíamos sus extraordinaria actuaciones y carrera. Él se describía como un chico común y corriente con cabello rubio, californiano, del pueblo, agregaría, que llegó al cine por casualidad y a pesar de su fama nunca obtuvo un Oscar por sus actuaciones. El tío Oscar lo obtendría por esos reconocimientos que se crean como un mea culpa, una especie de mención honrosa y déjenme decirles, que he experimentado ese galardón, no el Óscar, más de una vez en el género inocente de la poesía.

Redford no necesitaba premios, él con sus actuaciones, su forma sencilla de transmitir una experiencia cotidiana o de  gran vuelo en la pantalla, nos premiaba. Se ha ido no solo un gran actor, singular artista, sino un ciudadano defensor de la naturaleza, el medio ambiente, un ecologista, un ciudadano defensor de los derechos civiles. Meryl Streep, no lo pudo decir mejor, ha muerto un león.

Protagonizó célebres películas con grandes actores y actrices, icónicos todos, Paul Newman, (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, El golpe) Marlon Brandon, (La jauría humana), Jane Fonda, (Descalzos en el parque) Meryl Streep (África mía), Tres días del cóndor con Fane Dunaway, Todos los hombres del presidente con  Dustin Hoffman  y tantas otras.

Fundó 1981 el Instituto Sundance e inauguró el Festival de Cine Sundance en 1985, un verdadero referente internacional de las producciones independientes. El Festival lo despidió con estas palabras en X: : “La visión de Bob de crear un espacio y una plataforma para voces independientes dio inicio a un movimiento que, más de cuatro décadas después, ha inspirado a generaciones de artistas y redefinido el cine en Estados Unidos y en todo el mundo”.

Redford es autor de una historia propia, envidiable en Hollywood, donde fue leyenda. Como era de prever, su deceso en Utah, ha llenado las páginas de los más importantes periódicos del mundo y notas en las televisoras y medios de Estados Unidos e internacionales. Redford se fue en el sueño, ya había cumplido quizás todos sus sueños. Esta nota, sencilla, es un guiño, un tips, para quienes aún no lo conocen y se animen a ver sus extraordinarias actuaciones en sus películas.  Quienes lo conocieron, han dicho, que no era diferente en su vida cotidiana, a sus actuaciones en la pantalla. La profunda sencillez de un hombre sencillo. Ahí es cuando surge la  verdadera grandeza de un hombre comprometido con la vida.

Our generation ought to remember Robert Redford as an exceptional man — both the artist and the person.
Two qualities that, surprisingly, do not always go hand in hand.

Curiously, his stage name was the same as his real one: Charles Robert Redford — a truly authentic man.
There was a natural ease in every performance of his, something that deeply impressed those of us who followed his extraordinary career.

He used to describe himself as just an ordinary blond-haired kid from California — a small-town boy, I’d add — who ended up in film almost by accident.
And though he gained worldwide fame, he never received an Oscar for his acting. That recognition came later, in the form of an honorary award — one of those symbolic gestures the Academy gives as a kind of mea culpa, a mention of honor.

Let me tell you: I, too, have known what it means to receive that kind of recognition — not the Oscar, of course — but in the innocent realm of poetry.

But Redford didn’t need awards.
With each performance, with the quiet, honest way he conveyed the everyday or the transcendent on screen, he gave the prize to us.

Now he’s gone — and with him, not just a legendary actor, but a man who was also a citizen, an environmentalist, and a passionate defender of civil rights.
As Meryl Streep so perfectly put it: “A lion has died.”

He starred in unforgettable films alongside icons of cinema:

In 1981, Redford founded the Sundance Institute, and in 1985, he launched the Sundance Film Festival, now a vital force in independent cinema.
The Festival itself paid tribute with these words on X:

“Bob’s vision of creating a space and platform for independent voices ignited a movement that, more than four decades later, has inspired generations of artists and redefined cinema in the U.S. and around the world.”

Robert Redford wrote his own story — and it’s one that even Hollywood might envy.
His passing in Utah has filled headlines around the world, and the tributes from international media reflect the size of his legacy.
He passed peacefully in his sleep, perhaps having fulfilled all his dreams.

This note is just a quiet gesture, a small tip of the hat — for those who don’t yet know him, in hopes that they’ll be inspired to discover his films and his work.
Those who did know him said he was no different in real life than on screen.

The deep simplicity of a simple man —
and that is where the true greatness of a life committed to something larger than oneself begins.
