Un hombre predicaba/A man was preaching

Rolando Gabrielli2025

A man was preaching

on a street corner
somewhere in the city.

the world
didn’t move.
just stared
into the void.

he sounded like he was praying—
a glitching loop
of unreadable words.

"reckless," he said,
"to be thrown
into this massive asylum
and find out
no one’s in charge."

he said it again.
and again.
until he ran out of breath.
out of feeling.

meanwhile,
earth kept orbiting the sun,
clicking through
its seasons
like clockwork.

La flor/The flower

 La flor,

que nadie ve

a la vera

del camino,

no tiene más dueño,

que su destino.

Rolando Gabrielli2025

The flower,
that no one sees
by the side
of the road,
belongs to no one,
but its own fate.

Ejercicio atemporal/Timeless Exercise

 El espejo te da confianza,

mira y se deja mirar,

va cambiando de cara

contigo mismo y aún así

es fiel a su trabajo.

Solo advierte silenciosamente,

que nada será igual

a la primera mirada.

El tiempo no pasa ociosamente

para el hombre que ve pasar

su presente en el cristal.

Rolando Gabrielli2025

The mirror gives you confidence,
it looks and lets itself be looked at,
its face keeps changing
with your own — and even so,
it remains faithful to its task.

It only warns, silently,
that nothing will be the same
as it was at first glance.

Time does not pass idly
for the man who watches
his present drift by in the glass.

EJERCICIOS BANALES DE LA MUERTE/Trivial Exercises of Death

Aquí nadie muere

de muerte natural,

caen bombas,

todo muere

bajo la metralla,

se dispara, se dispara

de un solo lado,

nadie dice nada

a nadie.

La muerte

no descansará

en paz,

hasta que muera

el último

muerto.

 2

La muerte,

es emprendedora,

laboriosa,

empecinada

tenaz, diría,

conoce a sus clientes

-víctimas- diría

y procede

con todas las ventajas

de un oficio eterno,

 verdugo.

 3

Todos los muertos

están fuera de servicio.

La ciudad es un montón

de escombros, chatarra,

huesos rotos, huérfanos,

niños sepultados

bajo las silenciosas ruinas.

El paisaje ha muerto.

Nadie dice nada.

4

Burros hambrientos,

llevan gente hacia donde

nadie sabe dónde,

porque no hay donde ir.

5

La Humanidad,

pareciera no tener

un espejo donde

mirar su vergüenza.

Rolando Gabrielli2025

Here, no one dies

a natural death,

bombs fall,

everything dies

under shrapnel,

they shoot, they shoot

from only one side,

no one says

anything

to anyone.

Death

will not rest

in peace,

until the last

dead one

dies.

2

Death,

is entrepreneurial,

hard-working,

stubborn,

tenacious, I'd say,

she knows her clients

–victims– I’d say,

and proceeds

with all the advantages

of an eternal trade,

executioner.

3

All the dead

are out of service.

The city is a pile

of rubble, scrap,

broken bones, orphans,

children buried

under the silent ruins.

The landscape has died.

No one says a thing.

4

Hungry donkeys,

carry people to where

no one knows where,

because there is nowhere to go.

5

Humanity

seems to have no

mirror in which

to see its shame.

Preguntas mortales/Deadly Questions

¿La muerte es cómplice

cuándo se trata

de una asesinato?

2

¿La muerte,

debe ser detenida

cuándo asesina a miles?

3

¿La muerte puede vivir

tranquilamente

con tantas muertes

innecesarias?

4

¿La muerte es asesina

por naturaleza

o alguien la empuja

a sobrepasar los límites

de una vida que comienza

a vivir?

5

¿La muerte sabe

que su amo

la utiliza

con fines aviesos?

6

¿La muerte

es tan inocente

que guarda silencio?

7

¿La muerte teme

perder prestigio

que no se revela?

8

La muerte

no debiera perder

de vista que tiene

una cita ineludible

con la vida,

naturalmente.

Rolando Gabrielli2025

1
Is death an accomplice
when it comes
to murder?

2
Should death
be stopped
when it kills thousands?

3
Can death live
peacefully
with so many
unnecessary deaths?

4
Is death a killer
by nature,
or is it pushed
to cross the limits
of a life
just beginning to live?

5
Does death know
its master
uses it
for wicked ends?

6
Is death
so innocent
that it keeps silent?

7

Does death fear
losing prestige
that it won't speak?

8

Death
should not lose sight
of its inevitable meeting
with life,
naturally.

Esas palabras

 Esas palabras

que nombran y  fundan,

son las indispensables.

Rolando Gabrielli2025

Those words
that name and create,
are the indispensable ones.

Nadie dijo nada

 La inmensa soledad

hizo silencio

y nadie dijo nada.

Rolando Gabrielli2025

The immense solitude
fell silent,
and no one said a word.

Una gota de agua/A Drop of Water

 Una gota de agua

no llena un vaso,

ni hace más grande

el mar.

Un grano de arena

no transforma en desierto

al desierto.

Una palabra,

convertida en esa gota,

grano de arena,

puede iluminar

un poema,

si  suma otras palabras.

Rolando Gabrielli2025

A drop of water
does not fill a glass,
nor make the sea
any greater.

A grain of sand
does not turn the desert
into a desert.

A word,
turned into that drop,
that grain of sand,
can light up
a poem,
if it gathers
other words.

Un nido/A Nest

 Un nido

no nace

para ser

jaula,

tiene alas.

Rolando Gabrielli2025

A nest

is not born
to be
a cage—
it has wings.

Los libros/Books

Los libros

echan raices

porque nacen

de los árboles.

Se convierten en ramas

  hojas, páginas por escribir,

una misma semilla,

la palabra.

Rolando Gabrielli2025

Books
take root—
born of trees,

they reach out
as branches,
leaves,
pages still unwritten.

All from a single seed:
the word.

Qué horror el horror

 Qué horror el horror

y qué horror el silencio

que produce el horror.

Más espanto al espanto

que el horror y el silencio

 comprometen a tantos

y tantos siguen en silencio,

como si el espanto

no fuera suficiente horror.

Rolando Gabrielli2025

What horror, the horror
and what horror, the silence
that horror brings.
More dread to the dread—
for horror and silence
implicate so many,
and so many remain silent,
as if the dread
were not horror enough.

¿El poema es reflejo?

¿El poema

es reflejo

del espejo

que se ve

el?

Rolando Gabrielli2025

Is the poem /

 a reflection /

of the mirror / that sees /

 its own image in it?

El absurdo sigue mis pasos/Absurdity follows me wherever I go

Rolando Gabrielli2025

Absurdity Shadows Me Through the City

Absurdity shadows me through the city.
I’d lost my glasses—
those gifted by myopia to see things from afar.

I stepped into the car on autopilot,
started the engine, moved a few meters,
then repeated a familiar gesture—
a daily ritual, almost instinct—
to adjust my glasses,
but my fingers met only temples.

I turned back to search the usual places—
there aren’t many—
minutes passed, and nothing appeared.

So I summoned that old trick: memory,
a tool often dull and unhelpful,
for it’s memory that fails,
and a wide, foggy gap takes shape—
the past drifting too far from the now.

People say it with confidence:
“Draw a timeline,
trace your steps,
remember when you took them off.
They’re not lost—just forgotten.”

True enough.
But time kept moving, untouched,
while the glasses grinned from some secret place,
and memory went on
with its ancient craft of forgetting.

El poeta nunca ignora/The poet never ignores

El poeta nunca ignora

el aroma,

ni la sombra

de la rosa.

Rolando Gabrielli2026

The poet never ignores
the scent,
nor the shadow
of the rose.

No me pidas que no te sueñe/Don’t ask me not to dream of you

No me pidas que no te sueñe,

no hay tiempo que perder,

el sueño tiene el poder

de volvernos a encontrar.

Rolando Gabrielli2025

Don’t ask me not to dream of you,

there’s no time to spare—

dreams have the power

to bring us back again.

Rolando Gabrielli2025

I forget things—
I step into a room,
and the reason slips away like mist.
So I retrace my steps,
seeking the thread from the tangled skein.

Then I laugh—
as if all things were destined
to circle back to their beginning.
And the day moves on,
unfolding a new challenge
bearing a name lost to memory,
like a page left blank.

Time is singular,
and finds its meaning
in each thing,
in all that we have lived.

Al otro lado de la vía férrea/On the Other Side of the Railway Tracks

Rolando Gabrielli2025

On the Other Side of the Railway Tracks, He Awaits Us

The wandering Jorge Teillier of Lautaro,
Illustrious Son of Araucanía.

We were playmates
in the magical game of poetry.
He made the poem shine
on the gray streets of tormented
Santiago de Chile, along the dark Mapocho,
facing the Andes, each and every noon.

Aquí y ahora, frente al mar/Here and now, before the sea

a ver, caminar y respirar.

Rolando Gabrielli2025

Here and now, before the sea,
the horizon sketches a path—
perhaps, as tiny waves
dance at our feet along the shore.
Foam is all that lingers on the sand,
and the sea, without a second thought,
returns to its hidden depths.

2
Behind us, the city stands unshaken,
its white towers reaching upward,
seeking a space, an identity
beyond the sameness of its façades.
It’s an uncertain time,
where haste is daily bread,
and the landscape drifts by unseen—
just another storefront
with trinkets shaped by fleeting trends,
trivial, vain, artificial—
the prodigal child of the marketplace.

3
Despite ourselves,
nature endures—
more alive than solemn halls
framed by vast glass windows
and mighty columns of concrete.

4
Urban planner is the bird that sings
to wake us,
and still we struggle
to grow used to the silence
before the dawn.
Man strolls his image
past a mirror that no longer knows him.
What is useful seems doomed to die,
fueling the endless chain
of senseless making and unmaking.

5
Man—yes, he thinks, he chooses.
But these words are no verdict,
no proof
against the aching truth—
the most brutal act of all:
our own extinction
by our own hands.
Human stupidity—
our most formidable invention—
turns against us
and drags us toward the end.

6
Simple words are most needed
in these urgent, hollow times—
words that strike at the heart,
that do not spare verbs
in startling the reader,
or at least remind them
that we shape our own age,
even in its hardest hours.
No one must rule us,
nor must we rule another.
Peace, the right to life—
are ours from the moment
we open our eyes
and see the light around us.
Its simplicity invites us
to look, to walk,
and to breathe.

                                                       Rolando Gabrielli2025

Death is a fatal act, a perilous trade,
an ancient craft—inevitable and bold.

It is said that death was born with life,
each running parallel, with fates untold,
a duel from dawn to dusk with a seeming victor.
Yet I sense they are no foes,
but rather bear uneven aims—
one justifies the other,
two faces of the same coin,
spinning through beginning and end.

I wonder if they hold respect,
as part of a silent pact of survival,
a knowing that we forever dwell
between life and death—
balanced on the edge of an unseen blade,
silent, imperceptible,
with no exception for any mortal soul.

¿Qué se hizo la palabra?/What became of the word?

¿Qué se hizo la palabra,

dónde fueron las sílabas

y las consonantes,

castigadas, avergonzadas,

quizás, por su retórica banal?,

sino a  parir nuevos verbos,

pastar en tierras fértiles,

bestias de cantos sensuales,

viudas, navegantes solitarias.

¿Qué fue de la realidad,

cuando la sangre rompió el silencio?

Ah, qué vagas preguntas,

de pocas convicciones,

para un siglo en que el mercado

juega a la ruleta rusa

con la incertidumbre.

Rolando Gabrielli2025

What became of the word?
Where did the syllables go—
and the consonants,
shamed, punished,
maybe for their empty talk?

Were they cast out
to birth strange new verbs,
to roam fertile ground,
like beasts humming sensual songs,
widows, or lone sailors drifting?

And what of reality,
when blood broke the silence wide open?

Ah, these blurry questions,
uncertain, half-hearted,
in a century where the market
plays Russian roulette with doubt.

La palabra es un vicio/The Word Is a Vice

 La palabra es un vicio,

se deshace en mis manos,

cae sobre la hoja en blanco

y el poema habla, se multiplica,

de palabras verdaderas.

Rolando Gabrielli2025

The word is a vice,
it unravels in my hands,
spills onto the empty page,
and the poem speaks, multiplies,
with words that ring true.
