Acertijo digital/Digital riddle

Acertijo digital.

El pajarito

dejó de trinar,

Una malvada X,

lo mandó a callar.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

Digital riddle.

The little bird

stopped its song.

A wicked X,

silenced it all.

No hay mayor silencio/There is no greater silence

No hay mayor silencio/
y fidelidad/
que la sombra/
de tu propio cuerpo.
Rolando Gabrielli2024

There is no greater silence
and loyalty
than the shadow,
of your own body.

Estas son las palabras

Estas son las palabras,

a la medida de su tiempo,

a todo lo que fue

y está por venir.

El futuro porfía

por estar presente.

Solo el pasado

siente que vive

en la memoria,

viene cargado,

como la nieve en la rama

de un árbol que no cede

a su tiempo.

R. Denver/R.Denver

Un tipo descreído,

sin país, generación,

ni piso,

exonerado en los 70

por ese destino

que la historia muerde el anzuelo,

arrastra la República y sus barrancos

al sur de los abismos.

Inédito casi de por vida y convicción,

sobreviviente tenaz, visceral

en el País de Nunca jamás,

pasajero sin papeles en los 80 y 90,

en Limbo city, tránsito,

poeta extranjero,

Migajas, migajas.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

A Skeptical Man

A man of no faith,
without country, generation,
or footing,
exonerated in the ’70s
by that destiny,
which history bites like a hook,
dragging the Republic and its ravines
south of the abysses.

Unpublished nearly for life and by conviction,
a tenacious, visceral survivor
in the Neverland,
a paperless passenger in the ’80s and ’90s,
in Limbo City, in transit,
a foreign poet,
an anonymous author and relentless biographer
of lost innocence,
a traveler of the vicious circle,
of love and oblivion,
a skydiver in free vertical fall
before the poem,
in the drift of its waters,
devotee of the word,
tongue of the fish and memory,
dark breath in your throat.

Everything reflects in some mirage;
for a reason, he called it Utopia.
Mysterious beauty, he said,
the air is everywhere.

A collector of unknown cities—
Prague, Dublin, Denver—
of Kafkaesque metamorphosis,
a reader of serials and poetry,
novels tinged with reality,
bold romantic tales,
an insatiable devourer of fantasies.

He has plagiarized on more than one occasion
In Search of Lost Time,
with no success at all.
Literature for oblivion?

(The world walks parallel streets,
narrow, empty paths,
surrounded by walls, sad border walls,
blaring horns and birds fluttering
over asphalt and oil devouring
the ozone layer, the ceiling of every day.)

A light has three colors,
guiding us to the bottom of the sea, spinning,
everything is possible, even breathing,
loving the red sunset, the sun
shining from your eyes,
for example, sliding
over your silver navel, blind.

The trees still stand tall,
nature shakes off its shadow,
devours the landscape falling with its leaves,
following the invisible line of the horizon.

The world feeds from the digital hand,

crumbs, crumbs.

Las brutas, las mendigas/The brutes, the beggars

Las brutas, las mendigas,

a las palabras les digo,

apuesto a todo,

en este tiempo

de la imagen voraz,

a la mímica, al gesto,

apruebo y repruebo

la muda voz del monólogo

de utilería que sostiene

el silencio,

las llamo por su nombre,

les advierto,

no vengan a arruinar

el silencio de la mañana,

de las horas muertas.

.Rolando Gabrielli2024

The brutes, the beggars,

to words, I say,

I wager everything,

in this era

of ravenous imagery,

to mimicry, to gesture,

I approve and disapprove

the mute voice of the monologue

propped up by silence.

I call them by their name,

I warn them,

do not come to ruin

the morning's silence,

the stillness of lifeless hours.

Solo, me han dejado solo/Alone, they´ve left me alone

Solo, me han dejado solo,

para que descubra quien soy,

desnudo entre espejos rotos,

y verme como un desconocido,

descifrar mi destino

en las líneas de mi mano.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

Alone, they've left me alone,

to discover who I am,
naked among shattered mirrors,
and to see myself as a stranger,
to decipher my destiny
in the lines of my hand.

Gabrielli2024Rolando

The Blank Page

You know, the blank page

doesn't intimidate; it amazes

when new words emerge

in the light of darkness and return

to speak the language of the tribe.

All it takes is to touch

the ineffable and make

the invisible visible.

Whitman en N.Y./Whitman in N.Y.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

Whitman in N.Y.

The streets of Manhattan are empty of poetry.
A poem is not a shop or a mounted police officer,
not even this aroma of shipwrecked roses
that someone hangs in their hands as they walk,
or the skin of a seasonal suit,
or these girls who light up
the golden shop windows of the Big Apple with their laughter.
New York has, in a way, turned its back
on Walt Whitman, who gave poetry its name
without naming it.
Words are everywhere and nowhere,
people walk without knowing where they’re going,
the beginning of a poem and of a great city.
A bell lingers in the echo of a new silence,
a poem can find its face in the shattered glass
of a façade, behind a window.
It breathes better when no one knows that you and I are breathing here,
pale goddess, poetry,
we float, mature leaves of the calendar.
How strange it is to be without you at lunchtime,
to gaze at the yellow morning of autumn,
to see the city never stop for a second,
its adolescent shoulders bearing backpacks,
and everything moving forward into the new season.

Whitman dragged the poem like a public service—
nurse, firefighter, mason, driver, lover of the Nation—
he cried the poem to the four cardinal points,
his smoky body became the poetry,
and he handed out the word without a known God.
No one who has read him could say:
Whitman didn’t sweat, didn’t live, didn’t savor the air.
He was born in New York, where there is poetry,
but no poets who, under the night,
behind the sunglasses,
or where winter may grow its own bare trees,
cry the pink eyes of snow,
the immense rain of the poem.
Thus grew Whitman’s snow-white beard,
the white night of Manhattan, the black night of Brooklyn.
A piece of sky rounds a corner,
and history moves on, beardless, silenced by fear.
Whitman walked the rosy streets of San Francisco,
without religion,
without a party,
with conviction.
He always merged with the Hudson,
never stood on the far side of the river.
Everyone knows where his songs echoed.

Madame Nueva York/Madame New York

 Olvídame, Nueva York,

no somos nada,

me digo,

flor de las distancias, alas pájaras

tu opulencia de sacerdotisa

babilonia gastronómica histriónica

llena de basura mi nostalgia

este desconocido noviembre

No me pongas a prueba

con tus diamantes degastados

Alguien nos ha engañado

con pasos que en alguna calle

resuenan en mi memoria

A nadie le sobra tiempo

para ver la nieve pálida,

detrás del vidrio la cara

del poeta en Nueva York

Y venir a hablarnos sus perros,

de la sombra, de sus días

ladrándonos

par de desconocidos

cada un caminando

a la inversa

de nuestras historias

por el Central Park

al lado de nadie,

como en el cine mudo

flotando con el aire

de las carcajadas

Madame Nueva York

por tu ombligo

de moneda corriente,

te amo.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

Madame New York

Forget me, New York,
we are nothing,
just you and I,
facing a sea of glass
shattered by distance,
lovers of the sea and its waters,
a floating museum, skyscrapers bristling
as if the night descended to steal us from your improbable heights,
written in the infinite alphabet
of your rented words
for the occasion.
You suspect that debts surpass
reality, and nothing shines brighter
than darkness amidst the light,
where false coins burn
in the gut,
false like those of W.S.
Breathless multitudes inhale
the same sunlit bubble,
carving with their steps the footprints of New York,
dark snow on the warm spine
of a foreigner.
You barely fit within a journey of my memory,
a provincial gourmet,
I tell myself,
flower of distances, winged birds,
your opulence of a mundane priestess,
Babylonian, gastronomic, histrionic,
fills my nostalgia with trash
this unfamiliar November.
Don’t test me
with your worn diamonds.
Someone has deceived us
with steps that on some street
echo in my memory.
No one has time to spare
to gaze at pale snow,
behind the glass, the face
of the poet in New York,
his dogs coming to speak to us
of shadows, of their days,
barking at us.
A pair of strangers,

Forget me, New York,
we are nothing,
just you and I,
facing a sea of glass
shattered by distance,
lovers of the sea and its waters,
a floating museum, skyscrapers bristling
as if the night descended to steal us from your improbable heights,
written in the infinite alphabet

dark snow on the warm spine
of a foreigner.

to gaze at pale snow,
behind the glass, the face
of the poet in New York,
his dogs coming to speak to us
of shadows, of their days,
barking at us.
A pair of strangers,
each walking
the reverse path
of our stories
through Central Park,
beside no one,
as in a silent film
floating with the air
of laughter.
Madame New York,
through your navel
of common currency,
I love you.

N.York/N.York

 Nueva York, los edificios crecen

bajo la sombra de otros edificios.

La ciudad es una espiral,

o duerme, dicen, somnolientas

ahora quiero bailar.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

N. York
New York, the buildings grow
under the shadow of other buildings.
The city is a spiral
or sleeps, they say, drowsy
shadows of twilight and beyond.

The night already returns its face to us,
and I smile at this holy virgin whore.
With her goddess veil, the dawn falls,
cold steps echoing beneath her heels.
I see her running in Central Park,
crazy, I tell her, don’t leave your waist
to the wind; face down, it blows,
above, the roof scatters stars.

One, two, three, four steps resound,
the days that don’t return, they fly.
The city crosses the sidewalk, an ice cream;
the cold doesn’t immobilize the words.
The city laughs, an immobile body of wax.
Hold me.
In violet, the wall devours the graffiti.

It’s the moment, the hour without urgency;
don’t ask me for an epitaph.
Right now, I want to dance.

These texts were conceived in relation to a city unknown to the author, imagined, dreamed.
It is not just any city or space. Every place has a history, and we hold a perception of it, even from a distance. There are magnetic, emblematic places that become part of our memory without ever being visited. Images evoke other images, as if someone were sketching a dream for us. Time works as a double, hired by the imagination, replaying unfamiliar sensations that are unique and unrepeatable. The city inhabits us for what it is and what it is not. Time does not exist, nor the passage of hours, only the place that was and will be again, with or without us. In great cities, the past seems not to exist, swallowed by an all-consuming present that devours and reinterprets the echo of our steps on another street. The anonymous and vital take the shape of an unrealizable dream, the perfect performance of absence.

These texts speak of what was lived behind the mirror, perhaps imagining it happened that way or that it could. Can history surpass its own history? It’s part of a beginning. Or is it all a film, a terrible misunderstanding? Yes, it’s true, I speak of N. York, Madame New York, Whitman in N.Y., the Big Apple, a fruit desired by millions of foreigners in what may be the least foreign city in the world. These are words upon words minted in time, as I watch the white silence of snow fall, as if time itself were enchanted with a new, unknown, yet-to-come space.

These texts circulated in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Chicago, and Miami on Friday, December 9, 2011. They were announced in November by the monthly Rapanui Times, a publication that traverses the streets and businesses of New York and the other cities I mention. They were written for an unknown reader, but these words have always belonged to them.

Un paso más hacia el abismo/One More Step Toward the Abyss

Un paso más hacia el abismo,

puede llegar a tener, en estos tiempos,

impredecibles consecuencias,

y sin darnos por enterados,

volar ciegamente tras la inalcanzable

mariposa de la infancia.

2

Caer, caer,

al fondo de la nada,

sin retorno,

como un huésped indeseado

y no saber adonde ir.

3

René Char

¿Para qué sirve un paragüas nuclear,

te preguntas, en nuestro joven siglo suicida,

rehén de su propia historia?

4

5

Una encrucijada, como esta, me dices,

pareciera sostener su propia cruz.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

One More Step Toward the Abyss

One more step toward the abyss,
in these times,
can lead to unpredictable consequences,
and without realizing it,
we blindly chase after the unreachable
butterfly of childhood.

2

Falling, falling,
to the bottom of nothingness,
with no return,
like an unwanted guest,
not knowing where to go.

3

What use is a nuclear umbrella,
you ask, in our young suicidal century,
a hostage to its own history?

4

Yes, poets leave signs, René Char,
they also unveil the hidden landscape of words
disseminated by the ventriloquists of great capital.

5

A crossroads, like this one, you tell me,
seems to bear its own cross.

¿Cambiar la historia?/Change the story?

1

¿Cambiar la historia,

como si nos fuéramos

a vivir a otro mundo,

respirar otro aire

y soñar, tal vez,

con una esfera azul,

que no supimos amar?

2

Nos seguiremos preguntando:

¿De dónde venimos,

 hacia dónde vamos,

 y no sabremos,

aún,

quiénes somos,?

Rolando Gabrielli2024

Change the story,

as if we were going
to live in another world,
breathe different air
and dream, perhaps,
of a blue sphere
we failed to love.?

2

We will keep asking:
Where do we come from,
where are we going,
and still,
we won’t know
who we are.?

Es un océano inmenso/It is an immense ocean

Es un océano inmenso, mar y mar,

no puedo creer que allí se ahoguen

mis palabras en el oscuro centro

del monólogo donde el silencio

se escucha después de la tempestad.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

It is an immense ocean, sea upon sea,

I cannot believe that there my words
drown in the dark center
of the monologue where silence
is heard after the storm.

Quizás si me hubieras escuchado y atendido,

no estaría escribiendo este poema.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

Nora y Joyce

Withou fully trealizing it,

I wrote to my love, that letter

Joyce wrote to Nora, his future wife,
at least a few decisive words,
the kind only anguish dictates to reason.
I don’t know how we dared to say those words.
Perhaps due to urgency, the anxiety of those days,
the need to cling to existence itself,
to know it might be the last chance to be saved.
“Save me, my faithful love!
Save me from the malice of this world
and from my own heart!”
Perhaps, if you had listened, had heard me,

I would not be writing this poem.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

It´s no longer necessary

to see to each other,

touch each other

like stray dogs,

biting eacho other´s ears,

sniffing around,

howlinf together

under the light of te moon

or some streetlamp,

The virtual world

offers us almost everything,

keeping the proper

distance betwee us.

Soñé con cuervos/I dreamed of crows

Soñé con cuervos,

debieras estar ciego,

me dice el oráculo

-que todo lo ve-

y siento que mi horizonte

crece, infinitamente.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

I dreamed of crows,

you should be blind

the oracle tells me,

—the one who sees all—

and I feel my horizon

growing, infinitely.

Elon, en la luna/Elon, on the moon

día a día.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

It is not my intention to travel to the moon,

to count among my favorite friends

a pair of understanding robots,

highly empathetic, spiritually

adapted to these crazy times,

nor to wed one of Elon’s magnificent,

attractive, socially correct robots,

yes, the man who is about to buy the world.

Mine is to flow on Earth,

turning with words a garden

where I wait for each season of the year,

discover the secrets that accompany

and make life and its small things possible,

day by day.

La poesía piensa/The poetry thinks

La poesía piensa,

observa, explora,

nombra, funda, dice.

Razón de ser,

son sus palabras,

el poema.

The poetry thinks,

observes, explores,

names, establishes, speaks.

Reason for being,

are its words,

the poem.

La Bella me pregunta/The Beauty asks me

La Bella me pregunta,

¿qué haces?, hipnotizada, ella,

en el más allá.

Aquí, digo, revisitando

Una temporada en el infierno.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

 The Beauty asks me,

"What are you doing?" Hypnotized, she,

in the beyond.

"Here," I say, revisiting

A Season in Hell.

La palabra/The word

La palabra

ha roto el silencio.

Dueña de su voz,

lo nombra

su portavoz.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

The word
has broken the silence.
Owner of its voice,
names it,
its spokesperson.
