¿Borges soñó con
ser Borges
o el destino le
duplicó su historia
en Ginebra y en
las calles de Buenos Aires?
Lo hemos visto con
su bastón
guiar sus
vacilantes pasos por el mundo,
sin ver en sus
últimos años más que un
color amarillo
desvirtuado.
Nos dejó,
finalmente, su inconfundible
mirada que su
memoria fue dibujando
en todos los
presentes que acumuló
a lo largo y ancho
de su vida.
Fue fiel al Borges
que abandonó
Buenos Aires,
al Borges infinito,
que debió de
sorprenderle
a él mismo,
al Borges que
nunca abandonó
a Borges.

Did Borges Dream of Being Borges
Did Borges dream of being Borges,
or did fate devise a double
for his story,
in Geneva and in the streets
of Buenos Aires?
We saw him, leaning on his cane,
guiding his uncertain steps
through the labyrinth of the world,
seeing, in his final years,
little beyond a tarnished yellow light.
At last he left us
his unmistakable gaze,
a gaze his memory kept drawing
through every present moment
accumulated across a lifetime.
He remained faithful
to the Borges who departed Buenos Aires,
to the infinite Borges,
the one who may well
have astonished even himself,
to the Borges who never abandoned
Borges.
