Rolando Gabrielli2026
Summer always brings new airs, fresh ones, a gentle,
slow breeze that comes from the cold north, from temperatures that leave the
soul suspended. Poetry knows nothing of seasons; naturally it should bloom in
spring, be austere and dense in winter, more joyful in autumn, and in summer
sing to the four winds. Pablo Neruda, in an interview—quoted here from
memory—reminded the world that poetry in Latin America ought to be warmer and
more transparent than in cold continents and countries. He humanized the verb,
action, hope, and the future, and in his own way fulfilled that postulate in
one of the broadest poetic registers of the twentieth century, to go no further
back and leave each century in its time and place.
The world does not seem inclined to dig beyond what is
comprehensible for the fragile crystal generation, which keeps its attention
far from poetry and from other supposedly boring trends in art. And yet poetry
continues to flutter like the fish that reaches the sand, the shore of the sea,
struggling for survival again and again. It does not bend its spirit; it fights
word by word, verb by verb, manifesting itself in one way or another. Its
passion is tenacious. Thus it has proven itself century after century, even
when its authors and books have passed through the bonfire or the guillotine.
Yes, it does not allow itself to be intimidated, because its will is inherent
to its humanity, to existence itself—a habit consistent with the best of the
species. What would life be without poetry? What would words be without poetry?
What would poetry be without poetry, and the poor man buried beneath his poor
existence?
Poetry has given humanity great lessons throughout its
existence and has defeated death on more than a few occasions, because the
works of those poets have made them immortal. Poetry has given humanity great
lessons in the darkest times; throughout history it has never ceased to be
present, singing of beauty and love, denouncing injustices. Poetry is
everywhere, because it is life, and it has been manifesting itself since the
cave paintings on cavern walls, because everything that human beings create and
that transcends them is poetry. It is enough to take a glance at our modern
cities, inhabited by millions of people in their vibrant daily activity and
movement, to see poetry in buildings, streets, and the most unsuspected places
which, from being so inhabited, often go unnoticed by the human eye.
The poem, like the river, seeks its course, and
instead of dying it grows, it expands; with each reading it becomes infinite. I
often read old poets whom I knew in life—magnificent poets—and I see them alive
before my eyes. They tend to speak to me of their poetry, they guide me, they
remind me of the most extraordinary days of our lives: living poetry. They do
not give advice; rather, they invite you to read them, to enjoy their
worlds—what, how, and why they wagered on the path they traveled. They did not
seek success; they simply identified with the force of their words, with the
geography they inhabited, with the matters of the heart and, literally, of the
human being. They celebrated the word again and again; nothing they saw or that
occurred was alien to them. They set out to transform the everyday, the simple,
the complexities of reality and the relationships between humanity and nature,
among human beings themselves. Their main concern was life—that is, poetry.
You may say, friend reader, these are not times for
poetry. There are those who want to turn the world into something above all
hostile, uninhabitable, dark, an enemy to itself—barbaric, cruel, one might
say, in a word. Theodor Adorno, the German philosopher, for example, warned us
that “to write poetry after Auschwitz is an act of barbarism.” He also said:
“After Auschwitz, no more poems are possible, except on the basis of Auschwitz
itself.” Humanity has once again lived through a genocide. That does not mean
it will not be repeated. If the victims of the Holocaust knew this new history,
on which side would they stand? What can I say? That I will continue writing
poetry, because poetry is a key piece of the human condition. Poets are the
guardians of words.
Los poetas son los guardianes,
los guardianes de las palabras,
hablan con los vivos y los muertos,
sin prisa, sin tiempo
Sus voces se comunican con el viento,
no son más que señales,
huellas invisibles,
voces que acuden silenciosas
Los poetas son los guardianes.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
Poets are the guardians,
the guardians of words.
They speak with the living and the dead,
without haste, without time.
Their voices commune with the wind;
they are nothing more than signals,
Invisible traces,
voices that come in silence.
Poets are their guardians.
No hay tiempo que perder
en esta prisa de nuestro tiempo
Difícil no sucumbir al vértigo
tan próximo, cercano al abismo
No hay tiempo para frívolas nostalgias,
la escena supera a cualquier actor,
el espectáculo arde en llamas
¿Qué se va a construir después
de las cenizas?
El fuego volverá a encenderse nuevamente,
para invocar los conjuros del provenir
La palabra está llamada a convocarnos
desde el silencio
No lo olvides
No lo olvides.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
There is no time to lose
En el reino del poema,
la palabra no es ciega
y menos, muda.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
In the realm of the poem,
the word is not blind
and even less, mute.
Si vienen por ti,
ignóralos,
su amo
les robó
el alma.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
If they come for you
ignore them
their master
stole
their soul.
Nunca olvides
los sueños,
son eternos.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
Never forget
dreams,
are eternal.
¿Qué hace un
poema en este mundo?,
preguntas:
difícil saber,
digo, sin responder,
en qué geografía
o espacio
se podría
ocultar un poema,
sin ser visto
para no llamar
la atención.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
What does a poem do in this world?
questions:
hard to know, I say, without answering,
in what geography or space
a poem could hide,
unseen, so as not to draw
attention.
Cuando el mundo no deja
de asomar su nariz al abismo,
el mar atraviesa por una tormenta,
el hombre se amenaza asimismo
y todo lo que se mueve corre peligro,
reflexiono y pregunto a mis lectores:
¿son personas de carne y hueso
o son simples algoritmos?
Rolando Gabrielli2026
When the world does not stop
poking its nose into the abyss,
the sea is caught in a storm,
man threatens himself,
and everything that moves is in danger.
I reflect and ask my readers:
are they people of flesh and blood,
or are they mere algorithms?
Me dices,
superamos este
martes 13,
qué horror,
sonríes,
como si el mundo
estuviera
a punto de
estallar en mil pedazos.
Y muy equivocada,
respondo,
no estás.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
Un poema
debe leerse
tal y como
si se estuviera
escribiendo,
sin distraerse
ni un solo
momento,
instante.
El lector,
tiene la última
palabra.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
A poem
must be read
as though
it were
coming into being,
without drifting
away
for even
a breath,
a heartbeat.
The reader
speaks
the final word.
En ocasiones difíciles,
y sí las hay,
absurdas por demás,
siempre leo, releo
a Kafka,
no importa qué diga
o yo interprete
de sus palabras,
siempre acierta.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
El vanidoso sabe
que no hay nadie
ni nada más
grande que él,
a lo sumo,
su ego,
a quien llama,
su supremo y le permite
hablar en nombre
de Dios.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
Recuerdo con tal precisión y certeza
que se habría un mundo sin límites,
uno clasificable en categoría invencible,
fuerza sin rival, una pasión colosal,
que no admite derrotas ni fracasos,
menos comparaciones de aquellos días,
de gloria, lauros, minucias banales,
cortesías a un frágil y soriente ego
adolescente, simplemente inmaduro.
La historia recoge en silencio
sus verdaderos frutos
cuando menos los esperas.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
I remember it with absolute clarity—
the certainty that a boundless world awaited,
one marked as invincible:
unmatched strength, colossal desire,
a force that allowed no defeat, no failure,
no comparisons to those days
of glory and hollow laurels,
small banalities offered
to a fragile, smiling adolescent ego—
simply unfinished.
History, quietly,
collects its true harvest
when you least expect it.
La pequeña Gioconda,
la exultante Monalisa,
enigmática señora,
sonríe a placer
a la posteridad
y el mundo cruje,
traga clavos,
como una nuez abierta
por un taladro.
Amanecerá
y qué veremos.
La noche cae,
no hay certeza,
tal vez,
de nada,
se avecina la oscuridad.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
The small Gioconda.
Mona Lisa.
A smile
that remains.
The world
tightens.
Breaks.
Morning—
if it comes.
Night.
No certainty.
Perhaps
nothing.
Darkness.
Una palabra,
solo una palabra,
abre el poema,
se hace silencio
y todo lo que nombra,
ya no existe.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
Me quedo con el poema,
que se niega rotundamente
a ser claro como el agua,
exige lo imposible,
ver en la oscuridad,
lo que solo el poema es capaz
de descubrirnos a la luz
de las palabras.
se niega en verdad ser
un poema común y corriente.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
La mano invisible
del poeta,
es palabra,
escritura secreta,
voz del poema.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
The Invisible Hand
of the poet,
is word,
secret writing,
the voice of the poem.
Por la boca muere el pez
y el mar permanece
en silencio.
Ni todas las aguas reunidas
podrán salvar a esa criatura,
del destino que el hombre
le ha reservado, escogido.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
By its mouth the fish meets its
death,
and the sea remains
in silence.
Not even all the gathered waters
could save that creature
from the hook, the destiny
that man
has set aside for it, chosen.
Hay palabras
que se ausentan,
quieren ser libres
al uso del silencio,del olvido.
No admiten
la perversidad
dela traducción
y menos ser parte
de un discurso
banal y de cínica retórica.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
El patíbulo siempre
ha inspirado terror,
cuando menos, respeto.
Para un verdugo,
la horca es un vicio,
un deber insospechable
de inevitable costumbre.
El ahorcado, sabe,
no tiene futuro,
la sentencia está indicada
con la soga al cuello,
el cuerpo y el alma
colgada.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
The gallows have alwaysinspired terror,or at least, respect. For an executioner, the noose is a vice,an unsuspected dutyof inevitable habit. The hanged one knowsthere is no future, the sentence is declaredwith the rope around the neck, body and soulhanging.
Qué tiempos, qué tiempos,
cuando cae el verano,
si el mar, si el silencio
devuelve la cadencia
a las olas en la tormenta
y a remar vuelve el hombre
para llegar a puerto,
tal vez en calma,
a la orilla del silencio.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
What times, what times,
when summer falls,
if the sea, if the silence
returns the cadence
to the waves in the storm
and the man takes up the oars again
to reach the harbor,
perhaps in calm,
to the shore of silence.
Alguien te sueña,
te piensa,
te escribe,
imagina
quien eres,
adivina
tu nombre,
comienza
a tener
recuerdos,
considerarte
alguien
especial
y despierta,
felíz.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
Someone dreams of you,
A la página en blanco,
no le sobra ningún poema.
Atrévete a comenzar.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
Dare to begin.
Mientras tiembla
el trazo y busca
la ausencia de tus ojos,
tu rosotro cobra vida,
aparece realmente
como si nunca
se hubiese desvanecido,
ausentado, en verdad.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
While the line trembles
Esperando frente a mi casa
ver pasar el cadáver del enemigo,
bajo una intensa lluvia que lava
de impurezas el alma extraviada
de la ciudad, su rostro enemigo
de sí misma que mira pasar
frente a mi casa.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
Waiting in front of my house
to watch the enemy’s corpse pass by,
El año se mira al espejo
avejentado, solitario,
pasa, sucede,
no desaparece.
Rolando Gabrielli2026
The year looks at itself in the mirror
En tan pocas palabras,
tantas mentiras,
las mismas promesas
incumplidas.
2
La poesía es adicta
a las palabras.
Por ellas,
vive, respira,
nos asombra.
3
Solo escribo
palabras, palabras,
si me repito,
hablo con tu silencio
y dejo de ser Nadie.
4
La poesía existió antes
que la escritura.
Las palabras,
sobre un rumor de vocales
que transmitía la voz
del viento, el sol,
la noche, la naturaleza toda.
La tribu, la lengua
de la tribu hablaba
en silencio,
todas las lenguas
de la tribu.
6
¿La historia
es un juguete
de la infancia
de quienes dominan
la Humanidad?
7
Adónde me lleva
el viento, voy
Me quedo donde,
me trae el silencio
8
El tedio
es una obra maestra
del tiempo,
que acumula
en sus horas ociosas.
9
Un sol negro
nos ilumina
desde la oscuridad.
10
Mientras exista
una sola palabra,
podrás estar a salvo,
llámala amor, fe,
esperanza, porvenir,
Dios.
11
La muerte no cesa
su mano verduga
de intervenir
la vida
Toda la humanidad
sabe de qué es capaz
y nadie hace nada.
12
Solo te quedan
las palabras,
poeta,
no dudes,
no pienses dos veces,
en decirlas
a los cuatro vientos.
Rolando Gabtielli2025
La ruina de estas ruinas
son el silencio que las contienen
y la muerte que las habita
y reconoce en ellas la nada,
que es todo lo que cultiva,
su imagen desolada,
a su paso,
en tierra batida.
Rolando Gabrielli2025
and the death that dwells within them
and recognizes in them nothingness,
which is all it cultivates,
its desolate image,
in its wake,
on beaten earth.
