SERRAT, SE DESPIDE CANTANDO/Serrat bids farewell, singing

This poem, this text, has a very unique story; it was written without any corrections, in one go, spontaneously, on October 26, 2024, in Panama, shortly before noon.

It came about after reading Joan Manuel Serrat’s acceptance speech for the award bestowed by the Spanish crown under the name of the Princess of Asturias Foundation for the Arts. His words took me on a journey to the south of my generation. Yes, Serrat is an icon of my generation, an icon of the South. We have lived enjoying his music, his song lyrics, his joyful and transcendent poetry, his subtle worlds, his unwavering commitment, I would say, to his time. This poem is made of his words, his speech; it is a "deliberate plagiarism," unrepentant, to the four winds and cardinal points, with Machado included. A mixture of how I see and understand Serrat’s farewell as we approach the first quarter of the 21st century, the atmosphere of a dignified goodbye—a rarity in these times.

A child of humility, of a laborer and a seamstress, he held on to his essence, grounding his life in those small things, the joyful identity of a popular, simple singer-songwriter with the sole aim of communicating. He may be stepping away from the stage, but his music will endure because it speaks of humanity, love, life, without pretense or embellishment.

Serrat has always reminded me of my Catalan grandmother, born in Barcelona, Enrica Serra i Miró—her gaze, her humor, a philosophy of profound simplicity shaped by travel, people, years, life. Enrica, as the internet says, means "master of the house" or "head of the homeland." The translation suits her well.

In the end, to fill stages for sixty years is a long story in itself, and the fact that he remains an icon speaks to what he has truly been and meant for music worldwide, Joan Manuel Serrat. He declared he prefers paths over borders and described himself as someone who greatly delights in life, a social and rational being who needs others beyond his tribe.

Serrat bids farewell, singing
"I don’t like the world we live in,
hostile, polluted, lacking solidarity,"

where the little things

have been bought by the marketplace,

carried away by the wind,

and the train will no longer pass, nor will there be a ticket

for a return or one-way journey.

If ever, wanderer,

you loved weightless worlds,

subtle and gentle, they will have vanished

like soap bubbles.

The poet, wanderer, you must know,

only leaves traces,

for he only makes a path by walking.

¿Dime si no es maravilloso?/Tell me, isn’t the silence of words wonderful?

Rolando Gabrielli2024

Tell me, isn’t the silence of words wonderful?

That downcast verb, stunned by indifference,

trapped in the dense web of empty words.

The word falls in love with silence and sings for everyone,

and those who only see how the night slips away

at dawn and the song of birds

receive the silent first voice of the morning sun.

Pay attention, these words, led by

that downcast verb, stunned by indifference,

were written for you, dear reader.

They will shine if you keep them in silence

like the last wave the sea

leaves on the shore.

A comedian, or rather

a clown,

has the world teetering

on the edge of a precipice.

It´s not Charlie Chaplin

who made us and philosophy,

We are faced whit human stupidity,

a talent at is peak,

without limits, without end,

waiting for something we cannot foresee.

Viajero de la palabra/Traveler of the word

El poeta, principalmente,

es un viajero de la palabra,

camina, da pasos, por la tierra,

que el mar rodea,

su casa es la poesía,

quizás su memoria

sea su mayor patrimonio,

sueña como sus ancestros,

con otros mundos,

pero no deja de tener,

los pies en la tierra.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

The poet, primarily,

is a traveler of words,

walking, taking steps, across the land,

surrounded by the sea,

his home is poetry,

perhaps his memory

is his greatest inheritance,

he dreams like his ancestors,

of other worlds,

but he never stops having

his feet on the ground.

19 AÑOS EN EL UNIVERSO DE LAS PALABRAS/19 Years in the Universe of Words

Rolando Gabrielli2024

                                           Violeta Parra, cantautora chilena.

19 Years in the Universe of Words

October marks our 19th anniversary, a blog that pays homage to poetry, to the word, with over 5,350 edited texts. Words have their own wings, traveling from the ocean depths of the brittle stars, making us dream of new worlds, simple things, details, giving us signs. I thank my loyal and anonymous readers for their enthusiasm, love for words, Art, and human solidarity, all gestures that express the best of our species and nurture our spirit.

These are tragic times, filled with terror, extraordinary cynicism, impotence, indifference, and boundless stupidity. But I would also say they are times of solidarity, courage, and the search for a better world for all. I recall a song by Violeta Parra, timeless in its popular wisdom, titled "What Will the Holy Father Say," which goes: “Look how they speak to us of freedom When they deprive us of it in reality Look how they preach tranquility When authority torments us What will the Holy Father say, living in Rome While they are slaughtering his doves?”

Poetry, the Art of the ineffable, operates with all five senses and communicates the essence of life.

Thank you, dear readers from all continents. The house of poetry continues with its doors wide open.

diferente, desconocida,

revela a su manera finalmente,

algo inexistente.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

The toolbox of de poem

Is made of words, vowels and consonants

The absolute magic of the tribe´s tongue,

Lenguage, in single word builds.

A new universe.

Discovers a different gaze,

Unknow,

reveals in its own way, finally,

something nonexistent.

almost always, and I'm surprised

cantaba, cantaba.

 En el corazón del hombre

 cabía todo el paisaje

 secreto de la memoria…

Aquí estuvo el tiempo y la palabra,

el hombre cambió el paisaje,

 había sol, había luna,

había mar por todas partes,

el sitio y la ciudad esperaban…

Tránsito, tránsito,

la tierra dividida unió las aguas

 y los continentes se unieron,

el mar, el mar…

Esta es la nueva ciudad

que crece junto al mar

y sueña con su joven memoria,

 las calles,

los pasos que la vuelven

 a guiar…

Frente al mar,

las torres

 reflejan en sus cristales

las aguas.

Una ciudad blanca

pareciera, que camina descalza.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

The Mangrove Brought the Pink Moon

The solemn murmur of life,
ownerless waters, there was no time,
and the bird did not sleep in its cage,
it sang, it sang.
In the heart of man,
the entire landscape fit,
the secret of memory...

Here lay time and the word,
man changed the landscape,
there was sun, there was moon,
there was sea everywhere,
the place and the city waited...

Transit, transit,
the divided land united the waters,
and the continents came together,
the sea, the sea...

This is the new city
that grows by the sea
and dreams with its young memory,
the streets,
the footsteps that return
to guide it...

Facing the sea,
the towers
reflect in their glass
the waters.
A white city,
as if walking barefoot.

Nada se compara a tu mirada/Nothing compares to your gaze

Nada se compara a tu mirada
de profundos lagos dormidos,
ojos, los tuyos, para la eternidad.
No he visto otros
en este mundo de espanto y terror.
Nada se compara a tu mirada,
amor, de profundas raíces,
sin visibles fronteras,
tal y como viven las estrellas.
Rolando Gabrielli2024

Nothing compares to your gaze
of deep, slumbering lakes,
your eyes, meant for eternity.
I haven't seen others in this world
of horror and terror,
nothing compares to your gaze,
my love, with deep roots,
without visible borders,
just as the stars live.

Si el hoy te abruma/If today overwhelms you

 Si el hoy te abruma,

no te deja vivir,

en un mundo

a punto de explotar,

más allá de esa pequeña

tierra árida, empobrecida,

cercada, sin agua, luz,

vaciada de gente,

con miles de muertos,

arrasada, abandonada

por el mundo,

huérfana de humanidad,

condenada étnicamente,

crucificada,

estira tu presente

hacia el futuro,

un poco, al menos

y vuelve a estirarlo

con tu memoria

hacia el pasado,

sal del perpetuo,

tiránico laberinto,

del instante mediático,

pero no de la realidad.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

If today overwhelms you,
doesn't let you live,
in a world
on the verge of exploding,
beyond that small
barren, impoverished land,
enclosed, without water, light,
emptied of people,
with thousands of dead,
devastated, abandoned
by the world,
orphaned of humanity,
ethnically condemned,
crucified,
stretch your present
towards the future,
a little, at least,
and stretch it again
with your memory
towards the past,
escape the perpetual,
tyrannical labyrinth,
of the media instant,
but not from reality.

reafirman, tal vez.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

To be and not to be,
to exist or not to exist,
it is not the same question and yet they are similar.
To exist is to be in a place, to be present.
 To be is the essence.
They perhaps approach each other,
 a reaffirmation

Cuando la palabra acude/When the word arrives

 Cuando la palabra acude,

sin ser convocada,

When the word arrives,
without being summoned,
it opens a door and allows,
itself to be the voice,
of the one who writes,
with their word,
the poem.

antesala,

de la banalidad del mal

 En tiempos volátiles,

burbujas negras

sobre cielos y horizontes.

Bajo tormentas  de fuego,

La desafiante inútil cuadratura del círculo/The Challenging Futile Squaring of the Circle

Rolando Gabrielli2024

The Challenging Futile Squaring of the Circle

I haven’t taken the time to research how long man has been trying to square the circle. A testament to imagination, tenacity, and legitimate hope. The circle, as one sees it, is so personal, intimate, I would say, which makes it difficult to achieve. It can be a lifelong exercise in a futile and idle attempt. Man is a complex being; it’s difficult to decipher him when he becomes obsessive and thinks he knows everything. Man walks on two feet because he has no other option. Man surprises himself when he looks in the mirror and realizes he’s alive. Man has already flown toward the sun and burned his wings. Icarus, son of the architect Daedalus, ignored his father’s instructions and warnings. Mythology often leaves us with no few lessons, even in the 21st century.

Some may consider the squaring of the circle an illusion; others, a demonstration of the disturbing capacity of human idleness. I don’t recall a circus magician ever trying this test as a legitimate act of magic and pure illusion, to astonish innocent minds that only seek a few minutes of fun in the company of friends and the illusion.

Now, with so many disruptive technologies and Artificial Intelligence, in the midst of a state of wonder, perhaps a new illusion and imaginary world will be built that will finally square the circle. Before the fuse is lit and we join the dinosaurs in the beyond. That’s what I hope. The world today seems devoted to squaring that impossible circle. Peace and human rights share a time of disillusionment in the daily routine. It seems unbelievable, but man still moves by planetary mirages and fails to solve the basic issues here on earth.

Dante Alighieri, the very author of The Divine Comedy (we weren’t so wrong about his importance), like many before and after the 15th century BC, has tried in vain to answer the innocent question of squaring the circle, a metaphor for the impossible. Dante, it seems, wasn’t sure any human solution existed.

In a degree of illusion, the main character of Joyce’s Ulysses, Leopold Bloom, gives up on his effort, which he believes would have granted him great fortune. A literary illusion squared from an imaginary circle.

James Ensor

Rolando Gabrielli2024

James Ensor

There it is in the MoMA of New York,
a gamble by the Belgian from Antwerp
in his infinite cycle on the canvas,
perhaps stripped of the last label,
(of every mask), still alive is his message
to the crowds in the full 21st century.

These masks, visible to us,
laugh at the bourgeoisie of another era,
with their ridiculous suits and faces of horror,
building their own grotesque history.

Art has neither beginning nor end,
the canvas is always an invitation
to color, shapes, to a new way
of seeing and painting the world.

Y ya no están/And they're no longer here

Y ya no están,

son el túnel oscuro del mediodía,

fueron mariposas a volar

más allá de la oscuridad,

donde todo está por verse.

Y ya no están,

eran los mejores,

la generación de los versos azules,

corbatas amarillas,

zapatos de antílope.

En verdad, se hicieron notar,

para que aún hoy,

visitemos la memoria

de sus pasos,

la huella que el sol

cicatriza en silencio,

el camino de lo andado.

Rolando Gabrielli2024

And they're no longer here,

they are the dark tunnel of midday,

they were butterflies flying

beyond the darkness,

where everything remains to be seen.

And they're no longer here,

they were the best,

the generation of blue verses,

yellow ties,

antelope shoes.

Indeed, they made their mark,

so that even today,

we visit the memory

of their steps,

the imprint that the sun

silently scars,

the path of what’s been walked.

tiempo agrio, mal momento.

los he tenido mejores  y volveremos a ver

Difficult Times

It wasn't easy, it hasn't been easy,

one day we will sing in the mornings,

circular, disturbing days,

the sun extends its hand and madness

works overtime.

I like to whisper to myself to wake up

that this is a nightmare and it will pass,

bitter times, bad moments.

We owe ourselves an explanation,

as we reflect in solitude these days,

we look again and again at our empty hands,

and we ask ourselves once more,

what good was it to have so many pairs of shoes

if we walk with only two feet,

socks, ties for a single neck,

gloves to avoid infection,

if we let words slip by,

we looked in the mirror and saw no one

but our distant selves,

detached from nature and the simple things

that no one should ever forget.

Don't ask me to repeat the dream,

I've had better ones and we will see again

the infinite light at the end of the tunnel,

it's a promise, a new opportunity.
