¿Habla por los muertos porque
los vio vivir sus inocentes vidas
destinadas a morir?
Sabe la parca,
que se fueron en el azar
de la inocencia.
Los vivos han quedado huérfanos
de sus propias vidas,
la muerte trabaja intensamente
por estos días de terror y espanto.
¿Las fuerzas del cielo descargan su ira
y la muerte sigue haciendo su trabajo
a cielo abierto?

Where does death go to die?
Does it speak for the dead because
it saw them live their innocent lives
destined to die?
Death knows
they were taken by the chance
of innocence.
The living are left as orphans
of their own lives,
death works intensely
in these days of terror and dread.
Do the forces of heaven unleash their fury
and death continues its work
under an open sky?
The living who take death into their hands,
seem not to know that they too
are in the turn of the scythe.

The Word
no necesita demostrar nada, sucedió,
Rolando Gabrielli2024
"The past holds the pleasure of a time that occurred,
it doesn't need to prove anything, it happened,
it was simply a time of joy,
a fact with its own history,
there's no need to turn the page,
it was indisputably an event,
no matter how simple and everyday it may have been.
There are those who are experts in erasing,
hiding, disguising, and twisting the past,
and there it becomes relevant again to confront,
in time and action like a boomerang,
the trickery, the schemes, the well-worn deceit
of altering, disguising, or dressing up
the old, modest, simple reality.
Perhaps now, in the virtual world,
we are already living the past
like the shadow of a ghost
of a memoryless algorithm."
Dentro de mí,
el silencio,
es la realidad.
Rolando Gabrielli2024
"Bubble Within me,
silence is the reality."
La muerte fue
arrastrando el poncho,
de Norte a Sur, un
hilo quebradizo
entre el mar y la
montaña,
levantando el
polvo del desierto,
y al sur lo
eternos ventisqueros,
sepultando el
olvido, dando muerte
a todo lo vivo y
viviente.
Rolando Gabrielli2024
"Death dragged the poncho,
from North to South, a fragile thread
between the sea and the mountain,
lifting the desert's dust,
and in the south, the eternal glaciers,
burying oblivion, bringing death
to all that is alive and living."
contenida,
inconmovible, una despedida
que no deja más
huella
que el irrefutable
silencio
como un libro abierto,
quise ojearlo
y se cerró.

Open book
He told me he was like an open book.
I tried to flip through it, and it closed.
Te he visto,
lo sé,
enjuto, soñador,
loco, loco.
Ah, ya sé,

de la Mancha.

I've seen you,
I know, lean, dreamer,

Ah, I know,

WHAT WE ATTEMPT
What we attempt to lose without reason does not always return. I have already forgotten a city in ruins; it was my own ghost, the living grave of its waters, the mud, the doubt, and your poor circumstances. Why deny this life? A log that refuses to burn in the fire is like a counterfeit coin thrown into the illusory wishing well, as vile and false as a banker’s money deposited on a medieval altar, leading to the ruin of a spirit that incessantly rides the plains, and for some reason, bares its teeth in these times lacking the vice of the solidarity of coupling, which monks concealed for centuries, as if it were the infamous law of supply and demand.
2
We are now errand boys for the great Sacristan, sheep on the path to sacrifice, paying for the ruins of his crystal city, beggars at a golden altar.
3
Words sound out, in some pocket someone counts them, dirty coins to ascend Babel. I wonder, why not put our feet on the ground and leave these great stairways without steps?
4
Someone braids the silk that the worm prefers to forget in the butterfly that flies from the dusty bridge, and that the river lets cross, unmoving. Thus, time fires its blank cartridges, in a public square. Clumsy, undefined flight of pigeons that left their nest for a few crumbs. The house has a butler, but no gardener. What will you do, I wonder, bee, outside your hive, giving honey?

asombrarnos, sorprendernos, sino cumplirse.
Rolando Gabrielli2024
Accomplished Adventure
We are here, I almost always knew it, to undertake an adventure, the most extraordinary of our lives, and not just to be alone, to perhaps explore beyond the words of the innocent world of childhood. Space is infinite, and history can have a beginning and an end, approaching us unexpectedly as chance does, the passion of men and women in any age and time, suddenly. Dreams may come true and be nothing more than a fleeting reality, unexpectedly real, like a shooting star that only wishes to be imagined, a reflection of memory and the attention to words spoken at some moment. A real adventure accounts for our lives, perhaps it was dreamed before it occurred, perhaps it had memory, an unknown future, something more to tell us, unexpectedly, to astonish us, to surprise us, if not to be fulfilled.
El poema es pulsión
va avisando con su teclado interior,
busca su propósito
en unas cuantas palabras,
no se escribe para nadie más.
Oficio, oficio,
pide como un conjuro,
no se aventura sin antes ensayar
una y otra vez,
la nueva retórica que presentará
ante un desconocido lector.

The Poem
The
verb bends its back
each time
it's asked for action,
and it simply obeys,
keeps moving
as if its voice betrayed the dread,
yet it remains present, active,
vibrant, and its infinitive is to love.
Verb tenses seem
to have had all the time
in the world to complicate,
to make their actions more complex,
in the most diverse tenses.
I ask:
is it a beast of burden, a slave yoke,
or a free verb?
Does every action generate a reaction?
The verb should only feel
free to act, to push the salon verse
that bores just by being heard.
a lo que has llegado,
a no saber si eres
o no eres,
existes o ya eres
un subproducto
de la ciencia ficción.
Rolando Gabrielli2024
Oh, reality,
what you have become,
not knowing if you are
or are not,
do you exist or are you already
a byproduct
of science fiction.
The Patience of the Mirror
The patience of the mirror seems infinite, one might say, as unshakable as the very image it receives every day, knowing it won't last forever, nor will it be able to hold onto it, even with its monk-like patience, without apparent beginning or end, surrounded by mute walls, by the silent marble, and those trees that frame any natural landscape. The reality of the mirror is to see you and see you again, with no other purpose than to update your image just as it is and continues to be as the days pass, with the inexorable passage of time, the life that begins with your best smiling portrait and will yield before the patient mirror, which resists time and does not hide the truth, before its eyes and duty to turn the page at each glance that the glass returns with careful wisdom, because the face loses the glow of the years and will not be able to hide its failure before time.

Con esa palabra rota,
única, con que te he escrito
tantas veces, de mil maneras,
dicho, amor, sobrevive en ti,

Solo repito quizás un mismo poema,
digo, una y mil veces,

With that broken word,
unique, with which I have written to you
so many times, in a thousand ways,
I say, love, what survives in you
is what you are and always have been.
I only repeat perhaps the same poem,
I say, one and a thousand times,
if it were necessary.
Figurones y publicistas,
emperadores del mundo digital,
voceros entusiastas de un tiempo banal,
artífices de lo efímero y fugaz,

invade de malezas el espíritu humano.
En pocas palabras humillan
la belleza íntima, incuestionable,
de las palabras.

Tango for an Influencer

Rolando Gabrielli2024
It takes more than just a poem,
the right words,
just, in their order,
before the world,
in the right places,
over and over again,
with no result
and see death smiling
through the corridors,
in the grand halls,
parading under the noses
of the world as if the peace
of the dead were the only
one achievable.
The old Franz watched himself age in the mirror and saw how his eyes distanced him more and more each day from the landscape and reality. Perhaps he didn't realize how his wavering world crumbled in sync with his distracted movements. Upon waking, he would cultivate a studied, expressionless, static smile. He was kidnapped by his own forgetfulness, but he continued to encourage his image for a campaign to which his survival instinct did not adhere despite his repeated blunders in public. Among friends, he would boast of his preparations for a proper Third World War, as if that act were the cherry on top or humanity's last supper. There won't even be a place for the statue of the unknown soldier, said the Prime Minister of a pacifist country, almost unknown on the map, tucked away like an iceberg broken off from a glacier. It was a sort of Greek-style prophecy, without a parachute, though the world lived on the edge of the abyss.
The old Franz, dressed in blue for ceremonies he called official, though he had already lost touch with reality, took short steps in a circle and repeated his handshake to the air. Like an elevator going up and down without passengers, his body seemed to land on no floor. The old Franz already inhabited limbo, and no one would rescue him.
