Una mujer lee un libro en la playa,

al parecer vive una aventura

con el protagonista,

ella es joven, inexperta,

está siendo seducida

y no parece darse cuenta.

El día está soleado y el mar en calma,

la playa está prácticamente solitaria,

las olas vienen a vaciarse a la orilla,

el tiempo pareciera inalterable

como suele suceder cuando  el verano

entra de lleno y no pareciera tener prisa,

hace todo más simple y fácil.

La mujer da vuelta otra página

de manera coordinada, casi perfecta,

sigue el hilo de la trama y pareciera

estar atrapada, solo se le siente respirar.

Es su aventura  de un verano extraordinario

para ella acostumbrada a las cuatro paredes

de su oficina y dormitorio.

El sol, el mar y la arena

es todo el paisaje para ella,

fuera de las páginas del libro,

está aparentemente la realidad,

el mundo exterior sigue inmutable,

ella deja caer una nueva página,

está en otro mundo.

A Woman Reads a Book on the Beach

A woman reads a book on the beach,

apparently living an adventure

alongside the protagonist.

She is young, inexperienced,

being seduced

and doesn’t seem to notice.

The day is sunny and the sea is calm,

the beach is practically deserted.

The waves come to empty themselves on the shore,

time seems unchanging—

as it often does

when summer settles in fully,

without any hurry,

making everything simpler, easier.

The woman turns another page

with a coordinated, almost perfect motion.

She follows the thread of the plot,

and seems completely absorbed;

only her breathing gives her away.

It’s her extraordinary summer adventure,

a break from the four walls

of her office and bedroom.

The sun, the sea, and the sand

are her entire landscape—

outside the pages of the book

lies, apparently, reality.

The outer world remains unchanged.

She lets another page fall.

She is in another world.
